I was not very good with girls at school. I did not think I was half as handsome as the other boys, and I was afraid girls would laugh at me if I asked them for a date. I was your average wallflower at parties. If I fancied one girl, it was Samantha although I was too shy to ask her for a dance. One evening a deck of playing cards made her love me in an unexpected way at a party.

I took my pack of playing cards with me everywhere I went, because I loved playing Solitaire. Do you remember that solitary game you play all on your own? You may remember it as Patience where you move the cards around until the four suits are in the right order. The pack containing my cards was so tatty I had to remember to hold both ends closed when I carried it. No fancy card cases or boxes in those days.

I guess you already have an idea where this funny story will end. Although not funny hilarious: It was more a question of funny peculiar the way my pack of playing cards made her love me in an unexpected way.

I had a bad case of hay fever that kept me sneezing on that particular night. As I walked across the dance floor as close to Samantha as I dared, I felt a huge sneeze coming on. When I reached into my pocket for my handkerchief, my cards came tumbling out. The pack crashed to the floor, burst open, and scattered fifty-two pieces of thin cardboard across the floor.

My face was bright red as I crouched down, and gathered the cards up to the sound of all the boys laughing, except me. I sensed a half-familiar perfume as Samantha kneeled down to help. Oh thank you, I whispered. No worries Kevin, she said. I have been looking for an excuse to meet you and this is as good as it gets. Now will you join me for a dance? I have been longing to know you better.

She told me later how she fell in love with me that night, although I was so shy it was an uphill struggle for her at first.
